Dear AHA Foundation Supporter,
Last month brought shocking news when the Michigan judge presiding over the first-ever prosecution of female genital mutilation (FGM) in the U.S. ruled the federal law against FGM to be unconstitutional. Click here for our update and reactions in the media about this devastating decision. An appeal may be submitted, but this is what we know for sure: the 23 states that do not yet have anti-FGM laws must pass legislation urgently in order to protect women and girls. If the ruling stands, these states could become destination states for FGM.
The movement to end FGM would not exist without survivors and their supporters who bravely stand up to this barbaric practice, despite the risks and sacrifices. AHA Foundation is honored to introduce two brave women who came forward to share their stories of survival. Watch their videos here.
The number of websites and social media campaigns that spread misinformation in an attempt to normalize and promote FGM under the guise of inoffensive names is alarming. Read here as we debunk the most common myths about FGM that are spread by these online efforts.
As this year comes to a close, I urge you to renew your commitment and support of our life-saving programs. A great thank you to those supporters who have already sent in their contributions. Your gift helps protect women and girls in the U.S. from culturally-motivated oppression and abuse.
Happy Holidays,
Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Founder
