Today, federal prosecutors charged two Minnesota mothers with Female Genital Mutilation and Conspiracy to Commit Female Genital Mutilation in addition to the three Southeast Michigan doctors already charged in the Detroit-area case in April.

Earlier this year, U.S. Representative Dave Trott introduced the Stopping Abusive Female Exploitation (SAFE) Act, legislation that would increase the federal penalty for female genital mutilation to 15 years in prison and implores states to implement reporting requirements for suspected genital mutilation.
