To the extent that female genital mutilation makes the news, most of the attention is not focused on the United States. But new data shows that over 500,000 women and girls are at risk of FGM. Raising awareness about the issue is essential: Jaha Dukureh created a Change.org petition that received over 200,000 supporters. This article provides a background in the practices of female genital mutilation and how estimates of the number of people at risk of FGM in the United States are calculated.
