(Tennessean) – A measure Democrats have championed that would ban minors from marrying in Tennessee was killed in the state Senate on Tuesday after another similar bill, amended with language more friendly to some Republicans, advanced.
It was the latest installment in a saga for the measure sponsored by Sen. Jeff Yarbro, D-Nashville, and Rep. Darren Jernigan, D-Old Hickory, who pointed out a legal loophole that allows judges to grant marriage certificates to minors at their own discretion without a minimum age limit.
