While the average age of marriage has been increasing in the United States, there are still many girls who get married before they finish high school. While most states have a minimum age to marry of 18, these laws have exceptions when there is parental consent to the marriage. In Virginia, 4,500 children were married between 2004 and 2013; most of these children were girls married to adults.
