Last January, a married couple from Dublin were jailed for the genital mutilation of their infant daughter. The case was the first of its kind, after a law was passed in 2012 that banned the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Ireland. Ifrah Ahmed, the Irish activist who was instrumental in the introduction of the Republic’s Criminal Justice (FGM) Act, felt no satisfaction following the conviction, however.
“I don’t want families to be separated,” she said. “At the same time I want to protect young girls from being cut. It made me so angry seeing the consequence of a young girl being born and raised in Ireland being put through such a horrible practice, by her mother or father’s hand.
