With an investigation into the genital mutilation of girls in Michigan continuing, a metro Detroit congressman is calling for the federal penalty for committing such a crime to be increased from five years in prison to 15.

U.S. Rep. Dave Trott, R-Birmingham, introduced the legislation today along with U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., calling for an increase in the prison time for female genital mutilation of anyone under the age of 18 and encouraging states to enact laws requiring health care professionals, teachers and others to report suspected cases of mutilation.
