Cautious welcome to anti-forced marriage plan

Swiss campaigners against forced marriage have welcomed government plans to impose tougher penalties on those found guilty of imposing forced marriage, but they are unhappy the cabinet has stopped short of making the practice a criminal offence in its own right: the charity Surgir (“Rise up” in English) estimates that thousands of women in Switzerland are trapped in forced marriages, often suffering severe mental and physical abuse.
