Baroness Deech, Professor of Law at Gresham College in London, argues the risks of cousins marrying are not discussed for fear of offending Muslims: “Forced marriage and polygamy are theoretically very much disapproved of in the UK, and yet there is some indication that the police and welfare workers are tending to play down the evils of these practices on cultural or religious grounds out of fear of offending a religious or ethnic minority in our multicultural society”.
