Two women in Australia were convicted on charges of “khatna,” a procedure involves cutting a girl’s clitoris in the presence of several female elders as a rite of passage by some members of the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community. The women–a former midwife and the victim’s mother–who were convicted showed no remorse. The case is believed to be the first successful FGM prosecution in Australia.
