UK Convicts First Person Under Forced Marriage Laws
A businessman in the UK was sentenced to 16 years in jail after forcing a 25-year-old to marry him last year. The man raped his wife, threatened her, and told her he would kill members of her family if she told anyone of the abuse. Law enforcement officials hope that the conviction will serve as a legal milestone and encourage victims of forced marriage and other forms of abuse to come forward to police.
