Shelter in Tanzania Protects Girls from FGM
Increasing numbers of girls in Tanzania, specifically in the Tarime region, where FGM is most prevalent, are running away to avoid the practice. They seek refuge in shelter called the Termination of Female Genital Mutilation center. The center is funded partly by the United Nations and provides reproductive education to girls, in addition to police protection. Not all girls here are runaways; some parents even take their daughters to the center in secret, in order to avoid criticism from community members.
