German police have arrested two suspects after a young woman of Turkish origin suffered serious burns in an acid attack in western Germany.

The victim had reported the suspected attacker three times to the police for threatening her and using physical violence.

Authorities said the young man had been ordered to stay away from her.

For years, Islamic mediators have been stepping in to solve family disputes and marital problems among Muslims in Germany. A new book takes a closer look at how their reliance on elements of Sharia law, instead of German law, affects Muslim women.

The Muslim shadow judges are mainly protecting the patriarchal structures of a culture whose proponents are not truly interested in becoming integrated in Germany. Most arbitrators tolerate restrictions of the basic rights of women, and they urge women to accept these constraints.

German court resolves dowry issue by Islamic rules

A court in Germany decided to resolve a dowry dispute between two Turkish families in accordance with the rules of Islam, Anatolia news agency reported. Although in this case, the ruling benefited the woman, the decision creates controversy by using the rules of Islamic religious law–which are generally unfavorable to women–to arbitrate disputes.
